Hi, my name is Jacques and I was born in Quebec, Canada. I have been the Head Teacher of the Foreign Language Department at Chia Yang since September 1, 2003. So this is my sixth year in Taiwan. I love Taiwan and I will be on this beautiful island for the rest of my life. There is so much to discover in terms of places and sceneries.
My objective is to create an excellent learning environment at Chia Yang and to help each student to improve their English and French abilities. You are quite lucky because you will be learning with qualified and certified teachers. This means that there are no backpackers at our school. All our teachers want to give you the best lessons possible and they also want you to be better year after year. But, only you can really make the difference by listening to your teachers, by working hard during the lessons and by studying seriously.
Every Tuesday, our teachers will be testing you to make sure that you are improving your French and English abilities. If you fail the Tuesday test 3 times, I will be sending a letter to your parents and ask them to have a conversation with you. If you fail a 4th test, I will ask your parents to come to school and we will all sit down and have a serious discussion together. The only reason why I want to do that is because I want you to be better week after week.
I wish you all an excellent and happy year.

Dear all,This year is really special as it is my seventh year at Chia Yang High School. Over all these years I have seen a lot of improvements and know we are aiming at a high level of education in ESL. Dedicated Chinese and foreign teachers work together to fully prepare our students to achieve their goals: study abroad, become doctors or enter a good university in Taiwan. We all work as a team to provide our students with the best education a dedicated staff can offer.
This year I will be in charge of the English, French and Applied English programmes. I am looking forward to another great year.
Hello everybody!I am very pleased to be part of the Chia Yang team for a fifth year. This time, I will be acting both as a teacher and as TOEFL/vocational coordinator. I am looking forward to the challenges ahead!
And now, here’s a little bit about me. I come from a small town in the province of Quebec, Canada. During my studies, I got subsequently a literature college degree in Quebec City and English as a Second Language bachelor’s degree in Montreal. I speak both French and English fluently and recently started Chinese lessons. Who knows, maybe someday I will be able to converse with you in your native language! Here’s to a great year together!
Hi, my name is Olivier and I'm a Canadian from Québec, the beautiful province. Before teaching at Chia Yang, I have been a lifeguard, a swimming instructor and also, a swimming trainer for a long time. These great jobs made me realize I really like to teach. I also had the opportunity to travel to Mexico and Central America where I learned Spanish. It's with this language that I graduated from the University of Montreal with a teaching degree for high school Spanish and History. Then, I taught English and Spanish in a high school in Canada before coming to teach here at Chia Yang.I’m now back for a third year because I really like Taiwan and I'd like to learn Chinese. I am looking forward to another great year.
Hello there! My name is Joel Tousignant. I am from Montreal, Quebec, the biggest French speaking city in Canada. I graduated from University of Montreak and I have been teaching for four years now. I am very excited to start my second year at Chia Yang High School. Last year, I taught Senior High and French. I am looking forward to another great year!
Hello again. I’m Torg and I’m looking forward to meeting new students and seeing returning students. I’m from Seattle in the northwest of the USA and I’ve been in Taiwan for seven years, teaching at Chia Yang for four. I enjoy walking, hiking, swimming, chatting, reading, teaching and belly dancing. OK, I’ve never belly danced before, but I’ve heard it’s good exercise. I have a degree in Speech Communication so I know how to talk a lot, so be careful. I enjoy Taiwan the longer I stay and would like to see more of this beautiful island. If you can tell me about interesting places to go, that will help me a lot. Thanks for the tips and welcome to this new year of your academic life at Chia Yang High School!
Hello, and welcome to all new and returning students here at Chia Yang. My name is Kai Burdwell, and I hail from The US. I’ve lived in many places in Oregon, Idaho and California. I have worked as an outdoor guide teaching river rafting, backpacking, and rock climbing . I love the outdoors! Back home, I have taught art and political science at the junior high and senior high levels. I’ve lived in Taiwan for 3 years, and it has been such a new and exciting experience for me. My wonderful students and the friendly people here in Taiwan have made me feel very welcome. I’m looking forward to a great year!
Hello! My name is Mary Ann Robinson. I come from Alberta, Canada. I have lived in Taiwan for 12 years. This is my second year at Chia Yang High School. I really enjoy living and teaching in Taiwan. I am happy to be the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren – 4 boys and 4 girls. I look forward to another great year at Chia Yang, teaching and meeting new students. As of the September 16, I have been in Taiwan for a grand total of one month. I love it! From the frenetic scooter traffic to the bustling night markets to the warmth and friendliness of the Taiwanese, I am both constantly stimulated and made to feel welcome.
Despite traveling across much of Asia, I have lived most of my life in the United States, primarily in the rural South and in San Francisco, California. Although I am learning that traveling as a tourist is quite different from working as a foreign resident, my experience within Taiwan at Chia Yang has been positive. Thus far, I adore my students. In my humble opinion, they compare quite favorably to the students in the United States that I am accustomed to teaching. Over the course of the year, I hope that they will find the experience of learning English from a foreign native teacher both beneficial and rewarding. (Now, if I could only learn to speak and read Mandarin in a relatively short amount of time, I would be living in a perfect world!)
